Is 20mbit / s enough for a student?

Since I have moved, I'm currently looking for a cheap internet provider. I do not know anything about the whole speeds and do not know whether 20 mbit / s would be enough for a 1-person household. I don't want to pay that much for the internet either because I don't have that much money. With this provider I would pay 12 euro for 24 months.

My friend said that it is far too little for me because he also knows that I'm on Netflix or YouTube every now and then.

I only need the internet for university things

Is okay.

4k Netflix is running out, otherwise everything you do is likely to work.

If you only use it for the university, it is always enough. Netflix will work too. However, if you watch a lot, a 50mbit line is worthwhile

DSL internet (here you usually get your booked speed constantly) or cable internet (here the speed that actually reaches you fluctuates often)?

In addition, of course, there's also a little bit of speed, if you e.g. "only" connected via Wi-Fi.

If we assume that you constantly get your 20 Mbit / s, then it shouldn't be a problem for Netflix etc.

Here is a list of the different speeds required for the Netflix videos (https://help.netflix.com/de/node/306)

There you will see the following information:

0.5 Mbit per second - minimum broadband speed required

1.5 Mbps - Recommended broadband speed

3.0 Mbps - Recommended for standard resolution

5.0 Mbps - Recommended for HD quality

25 Mbit per second - Recommended for Ultra HD quality

So you will probably not be able to watch Ultra HD smoothly.

You can find something about the speeds for YouTube here (https://praxistipps.chip.de/youtube-so-hoch-ist-der-datenverbrauch_48565)

Here is the most important for you from the link:

144p: 0.06 Mbit / s

240p: 0.33 Mbit / s

360p: 0.66 Mbit / s

480p: 1 Mbit / s

720p: 2.66 Mbit / s

1080p (Full HD): 3.73 Mbit / s

So you see, you should be able to watch all of this without any problems (of course if you don't run Netflix and an extremely large number of YouTube Full HD videos at the same time)

That's enough for one person.

Even with 2 people so if a friend comes you can still watch yt and Netflix. (Netflix Hd minimum requirement 5 Mbit / s)

Higher speeds are especially useful for faster downloading or for larger apartments with several floors, since you can of course no longer get the output power with amplifiers

For 24 months 12 euro strikes me as incredibly cheap. If you want to book on comparison portals such as Check24 or Verivox, you will not achieve the "average price" you mentioned in life.

A 1080p30FPS Youtube video needs less than 5 Mbit / s to run smoothly.

For Netflix in 4k (UHD) it needs 25 Mbit / s: https://help.netflix.com/...e/node/306

But this only affects the download rate, how big would the upload be? For uploading files to a cloud, synchronization, backup from a cell phone… They also need a lot of upload rate, which should be at least 5Mbit.
