I sometimes watch movies or TV series with the subtitle function, ie audio and subtitles in German, just so I can expand my vocabulary, but I have the problem that the subtitles are not identical to the audio tracks. The statement is the same, but the subtitles are usually different than what is actually spoken. Can you fix this problem? Or why are not the audio tracks and the subtitles identical? The same problem I have synonymous with Amazon Prime, no matter what series I watch…
I've noticed that lately, but I do not know what you can do because it's all done through the Netflix / Amazon app. I used to watch a lot of series on the PC via the VLC player, because there's the possibility to adapt the subtitle track. : /
Subtitles must always be worded as short as possible, since you have to perceive the film as such, and not only the perfectly translated text, which would have to change way too fast. Remember that the same statement in German text often turns out to be half as long as an English text.
Try it yourself. Translate only one scene, as accurately as possible, and then check if you could actually read that translation in the length of the scene, and get some of the movie itself.
Better way: Read books in the foreign language, always follow the words you do not understand - with time it becomes less and less what you need to look up. This way is far better than reading German text, and hearing foreign-language text only in the background.
Thanks for the answer, I had actually thought that it would be easy to "read along" the subtitles as support. Since the reading is indeed supported by the audio track… Then you would theoretically just go over it with your eyes.
I always watch Netflix in English because I live abroad, and there are subtitles "English" and "English (cc)".
Normal means that the dialogs are translated, and that is largely identical to the audio.
(cc) means that the sound is translated, so also sounds like ringing or a bang and so on. And there's such a big difference that you can't really watch both together.
Maybe you also have these two sorts of subtitles?
