Would such a relationship work realistically?

So that just came into my head and was wondering… Something like that certainly applies to someone, but does it work?

2 people get to know each other online via social media, for example. Chats are established, then phone calls and video chats. Listen to music together every day, watch videos together, watch Netflix and all of that online.
Then these 2 people fall in love, but live far away. Therefore, they only meet twice a year - for example during the summer and Christmas holidays.

Do you think such a "relationship" would work realistically? (Among young people)

I would say that the majority would lack physical closeness too much. Especially when you don't see an end (i.e. You haven't agreed to move in together after two years or something).
