Is it possible to legally watch a film in good 4K on the mobile phone?

Since many cell phones nowadays already have a WQHD + OLED panel, it makes a lot of sense in my opinion, e.g. Watching films and series on the phone while on the go. After all, you only get the same display quality (i.e. 4K OLED) with a television from at least 1,000 euro (more likely from 2,000 euro).

The only problem is that I have not yet found a way to watch films and series in this quality on a cell phone.

Let's take Netflix as an example:

The highest possible resolution on Android is 1080p (the possible 3200 x 1440p are therefore not used). You can't even speak of HDR here, as no deep / dark colors are displayed here. It's hard to describe, but the colors often seem pretty "muddy" (especially in dark scenes). I think it's a shame how much Netflix compresses movies for mobile devices. What Netflix provides is simply an insult and is unbearable while watching.

Since Netflix is largely a leader in the industry, I think this speaks for all other providers as well. I haven't had enough experience with that yet, so I'm not entirely sure.

So my question is:

Does anyone know any way to watch cinema films on their mobile phones in 4K / WQHD and HDR? The black values should be at least partially appropriate for OLED (and not as catastrophic as on Netflix).

Of course, I'm aware that you can also download pirated copies of 4K Blurays from the Internet. These files are usually 15 to 30 GB in size and often provide an excellent picture with a lot of depth information, HDR, perfect black, real 4K etc. But unfortunately this is illegal, which is why I do not want any recommendations!

You can also buy 4K films from Amazon Prime.

Also on Android?

Te

I can see the difference very well! When I switch a YT video back and forth between 1440p and 1080p, I see a clear difference. I see this particularly strongly in the UI (e.g. With texts).

ch

But you know that every Netflix subscription offers a different video quality, right?

The single subscription for 8 euro only has HD

The partner subscription for 12 euro has full HD

With the family subscription for 16 euro you can watch 4K.

This is ONLY possible with this subscription, and Netflix points out that not all films are available in 4K, so to knock down Netflix because of the quality just because you have no idea is already bad.

Te

I don't think you get real 4K there. That is definitely very compressed. How big do you estimate a 2 hour 4K movie on Prime? 3 GB?

Te

I have the 4K subscription! However, Netflix does not support 4K on Android. It is of course supported on my TV, but not on my Galaxy S20 Ultra, because it is apparently not worth investing so much money in the required bandwidth, etc…

Ro

If you buy a movie that is specifically offered in a 4K version, it should also be 4K. Anything else would be customer fraud.

ch

That is probably due to the cell phone, I can't complain with my iPhone, but in my opinion Android is trash anyway.

Te

I don't think 4K is only supported on IOS and not on Android. That just doesn't make sense!

ch

Well, I have a top streaming quality, can't complain.

Do you notice the difference on your cell phone or your television? Do you use a tablet as a cell phone? Because you shouldn't be able to distinguish between 1080p and 1440p so easily with the naked eye, unless you have had Bionic eyes built into you.

Te

Can you only buy 4K films separately on Prime or stream them with a monthly subscription?

Ro

Believe that this is included with Prime Title is a separate tab

Te

Ne have normal eyes and I see it very clearly at a distance of about 5 to 30 cm from the display!

Te

Just tried it out. The films are advertised as 4K (it is in the description and even in the title), but when you watch, you only see an "HD" in the bottom left next to the duration. I just do not understand! Probably it really only works on a TV or PC?! How is it with you?

Bi

A real film that is shot in digital 4K or on 35mm / 70mm will never even begin to develop its effect on a 6 inch mobile phone screen.
The display resolution of cell phones is nice and good, especially when reading text or looking at pictures, but I would never watch a movie on a cell phone. When you're out and about, maybe a comedy series on Netflix, but watch something like Dark Knight, Hateful 8, Mad Max or something similar on your mobile phone?

I think it is not possible to access 4K content on the mobile phone via netflix / Prime etc., if only because of the high battery consumption that would result.

And there's a reason why the televisions cost in the 1000 euro range, although that does not even come close to reaching the possible quality of the films. In addition, it is of course not the same panel as in the mobile phone, just in terms of contrast.

And you don't even have to start with the sound, I can completely forget about my cell phone speakers (even if stereo) for a high-quality film mix in DD / DTS 5.1 / 7.1 / Atmos / X.
So it should be a television, it doesn't have to be high-end 4k for 5000 euro, but 55 inch LED and 4K you get from time to time for 600 euro (of course no OLED, but the larger picture alone is a lot greater added value than OLED on a 6 inch display), then an acceptable soundbar, and you are much better served and have something of it for a long time and for many films.

Edit: there's also the aspect ratio (2.35: 1 / 2.39: 1 etc.), i.e. The aspect ratio, because the films are of course mostly widescreen, you have even less screen on the already small cell phone.

Yes, everything is clear to me. Unfortunately, at the moment I can only look on my mobile phone due to my private situation. I don't live at home right now. At home I would have a 4K HDR QLED and a pretty good 5.1 system. So I'm currently dependent on my cell phone and have to live with it. I got myself a stand / arm for my cell phone so that it is in front of me without having to hold it. As a sound source I use the Galaxy Buds + (which incidentally have a very bad latency).

Bi

And you don't have a TV at the moment? So I think every television is better than watching on the phone ^^
