FaceTime on Mac makes background programs quiet?

Have the following concern.

Whenever I call someone on FaceTime, on a Mac, the background programs like YouTube or Netflix automatically become immensely quieter and lose audio quality. Can you change that somewhere?

This is completely normal behavior… At least you should be able to concentrate on the conversation.

That's all well and good, but still doesn't answer my question
