Difference between moth and butterfly?

I'm watching Earth at Night on Netflix. One episode also shows moths

To me, this moth looked like a butterfly. So what exactly is the difference between a moth and a butterfly?

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything through Google

Ki

The moth is also a butterfly, there are day and night moths:

On the basis of the antennae, moths and moths can be differentiated from one another: While our butterflies have thickened club-shaped at the end, moths usually have feathered or straight, unthickened antennae.

Bo

A moth is a group within butterflies. Namely all butterflies that do not belong to the butterflies

De

There's no difference. Butterfly is the umbrella term, the distinction between butterflies and moths only relates to the way of life, this is not a zoological name.

You also copied the misspelling 😅

Ma

There are differences in what they eat. It is not the same for both and what they are concerned with.

Ma

Something wrong. Butterflies belong to the group of moths. There are differences. The group of butterflies, for example, has a characteristic that they eat. While this does not always apply to Falter itself.

Bo

Aren't butterflies and moths actually synonymous?

And then the division into moths and moths that I have emphasized here.

And by the way… As far as I know, diet is not necessarily a characteristic that would establish a new grouping exclusively. Moths per se are not moths either.

Ma

Actually, they are butterflies. There are moths that are nocturnal and moths that are active during the day and then there are butterflies. The differences are not necessarily recognizable by their appearance (unless you can name all types)

There are people who differentiate between diurnal moths and nocturnal moths and butterflies.

While butterflies only feed on nectar, this is not the case with butterflies, whether moths or night moths.

Moths, for example, also belong to the group of butterflies. But they are very different from butterflies.
