Difference Between British and American English?

What exactly is the difference between British and American English?

Would an American understand me if I spoke British English to him?

Since I'm learning British English at school, I want to expand my knowledge of English as much as possible despite good English, so I would like to continue watching my Netflix series in English, but if it's a US series, then it's no use to me if I want to improve my British English skills, or do I?

What can I do? , Should I still watch US American series, would it still help me? , maybe it doesn't even have that big a difference.

Could someone help me, thank you!

The accent is different and there are some words that differ. Such as aubergine and eggplant, but it doesn't really matter what English you learn. I also only learned British English at school, but watched all series in American English. That never bothered me, my grades are still great and I understand everything. Just watch series in English, whatever your accent, to expand your general vocabulary and improve your language skills.

Thanks!

British, Australian, and American English are different dialects. As if a Swabian, a Hessian and a Saxon were talking to each other, they can sometimes hear a few words or expressions that are funny, but by and large they understand each other.

Pe

The difference is that the Americans say different words than the English and pronounce them slightly differently.

e.g. AE: lift

BE: elevator

German: elevator

In addition to the very different accents, which definitely still exist within Great Britain and North America, the differences are often only in the spelling - but there are also completely different words.

Me

At school you (too) learn both British and American English.

Let's just assume that neither the English dialect - BBC-English is considered to be something of a norm, but is only spoken by a few and is basically just one of many British dialects -

there's still the American dialect,

British English and American English are one language, English.

Over the distance and time, however, the language has developed slightly differently in the individual countries, taking on its own color, so to speak its own stable smell.

At englisch-hilfe.de, wikipedia.org, learnenglish.de and on many other websites you will find vocabulary lists (englisch-hilfe.de/words_list/british_american.htm), exercises and tips on the differences between BE and AE.

Or you just enter British English American English on Google.

Just this much from me:

British English (UK or BE) and American English (US or AE) are different

• in pronunciation (dialects, etc.)

• in the vocabulary

Examples:

Banknote UK note US bill, UK lift US elevator, UK underground (in London tube) US subway and many more.

• in the notation:

• UK -our = US -or; Examples: humor, favor, etc.

• UK -ou… = US -o…; Examples: mold, mustache, etc.

• UK -au… = US -a…; Examples: gauntlet, staunch

• UK -ae / oe = US -e; Examples: medieval, maneuver, etc.

• UK -re = US -er; Examples: theater, center, etc.

• UK -ce = US -se; Examples: defense, license, etc.

• UK -ll… = US = -l…; Examples: traveler, marvelous, etc.

• UK -l = US = -ll; Examples: fulfill, enrol, etc.

• UK gram = US gram; Examples: programs

• UK ax, plow, check, abridgement, acknowledgment, judgment =

US ax, plow, check, abridgment, acknowledgment, judgment

• in grammar

- in the use of tenses (e.g. Past simple vs. Present perfect, etc.)

- in the sequence of tenses in the if clauses

- with the prepositions (on the weekend = AE; at the weekend = BE; etc.)

- i.a.

Ultimately, the differences between British and American English aren't that big. And often both are mixed.

PS: However, under certain circumstances there can also be confusing misunderstandings if, for example, an American in England buys suspenders for himself

and get suspenders for it.
