A Korean Odyssey on NETFLIX - Can someone who speaks Korean say something to me?

I'm watching the series "A korean odyssey" on NETFLIX and I'm blown away by the incredible story of Samjang and Son-Oh-Gong.

Unfortunately, I do not speak Korean and yet I would be interested to know what some terms in the story mean for a meaning. But they are not translated in the German subtitles and used in the original, so I think they are probably fantasy or proper names. But still:

What does the title "Hwayugi" translate? "A korean odyssey" seems to me to be only the international title (?)

Can one also explain "samjang" and "Geumganggo" in German or are they simply fictitious names for this series?

Thank you to all who make an effort for me!

I love this series and I'm so sad because there will not be a second season. I would have liked to see Jin Seon-Mi and Son-Oh-Gong again.

I do not know the series yet. 화 유기 (花 游记) actually means something like pilgrimage to the west but judging by Hanja is more like "a wonderful journey".

Ssamjang is a type of pasty sauce that is used for ssam (boiled cabbage wrapped in cabbage). Geumganggo is a ring or an ornament consisting of two spirals from Buddhism.

Yes, it is typical for Korean dramas that there's no sequel. This is because it is extremely difficult for production to find the same cast for the tight deadlines. A drama series lasts several months and that is different than a movie production for the cinema. Scripts are also designed so that after the finale, a further development of the story makes little sense. The situation is different with series that are planned from the beginning for several seasons (for example, Kingdom of Netflix).

A big thank you to you, Hugosfreund, for answering all the questions I had! Now I'm also a lot more clear in the story than what the subtitles give. Great!

Why is that so? Fr Fridgediamond
