Sounds so German but the Jews from the series live in NY. Got a little confused. It is not Hebrew either.

it has a lot to do with German.

Their ancestors probably come from Eastern Europe. Many of the Eastern European Jews spoke Yiddish.
Yiddish actually emerged from the old Middle High German because many Jews were expelled from Germany and found a new home in Eastern Europe.
That's why Yiddish sounds so German. Many words seem familiar to you.
