I want to buy a Fire TV Stick. But don't have Amazon Prime. I have a Netflix account and want to watch YouTube videos. That works without Amazon Prime, right?

Yes that works with the stick without any problems. And you can still borrow or buy (for a fee) all the films that amazon offers.

However, I would rather get a Chromecast if I'm not an Amazon customer.

Yes, you can do almost anything else with it. It just has the surface of Amazon and you are dependent on their app store. Third-party apps can also work, but you have to use some tricks.
