Is it worth getting a Kindle?

I really enjoy reading books. But unfortunately most books are always so expensive and since I'm still a student I often can't afford them. Before, I mostly borrowed my books from the library, but unfortunately it is not currently possible. That's why I want to get a Kindle Paperwhite. My question is is it worth getting a Kindle or another brand? Do you have to pay monthly like Netflix so that you can borrow the books or do you have to pay money for each book. I'm very much looking forward to your answer

If you read a lot, an ebook reader is definitely worth it!

► But: DO NOT take a Kindle!
Kindle is just a special ebook reader for Kindle e-books from Amazon.
With Kindle you are tied to Amazon, since Kindle can only read the special Amazon ebook format. Except for Amazon, Kindle can do nothing!
Kindle is therefore only suitable for absolute Amazon fans who ALWAYS want to BUY the eBooks they want to read from Amazon.

► All other ebook readers (Tolino, Pocketbook, Kobo, …) are much better than Kindle and can do a lot more than Kindle!
These ebook readers are supported by the German book trade and with which you can use the online library of the city libraries http://www.onleihe.net or the online library app), i.e. Borrow eBooks for free online from the library, conveniently at home, around the clock, if you have a library card. That saves a lot of money:-)
With these ebook readers (Tolino, Pocketbook, Kobo, …) you can buy e-books at all ebook shops (Thalia, Hugendubel, Weltbild, ebook.de, …) except Amazon.

Kindle can't use the online library because Amazon prevents it. Amazon wants Kindle owners to BUY their eBooks from Amazon and not borrow them for free in the online loan.

All other ebook readers can use the eLibrary - only Kindle not!

So if you want to save money reading e-books, then DO NOT use a Kindle!
Take one of the other ebook readers, e.g. A Tolino or pocketbook, and use the online library of the city library. This is the cheapest way to read really good eBooks for free.

If you have any questions - please:-)

Thank you very much for your answer you helped me a lot.

With pleasure:-)
I know a lot of people who have bought a Kindle because they didn't know anything about ebook readers before and didn't even know what the differences are. Because Kindle is so well known for its Amazon advertising, they thought Kindle was the best ebook reader.
And when they wanted to use the eLibrary, the big disappointment came because Kindle can't do that.

So you should only take a Kindle if you always want to BUY your eBooks on Amazon!
If you want to use the eLibrary, then NO Kindle!

But I would keep my hands off Kindle. You're tied to Amazon and can't buy books in any other store.

There are other e-book readers available. For example Kobo, Pocketbook, Tolino and a few others. The advantage is that you can (except Amazon) use all shops (Hugenduble, Thalia, Weltbild, etc.) and the library's on-line loan.

Personally, I'm a fan of Tolino because the Tolino cloud is quite large and can hold 10,000 books. If it's not locked down, I go into the store, look for a book, then go to the cash register, say that I want it as an e-book and can then use the code on the receipt to upload it to the cloud (either with the Tolino app or if the Tolino e-book is connected to Wi-Fi). Or I'll get a voucher from Thalia. Personally, I don't like giving my account details (I don't even pay by card) and I like to go to bookstores.

One more addition: If you already have a library card, then you certainly also have your access data for online access to your library. With these access data you can already use the online loan: on the PC, on the tablet and on the smartphone.
With a real e-book reader, reading is of course more pleasant, but you can also try out the eLibrary on the other devices now.
