In general, I can recommend you Brooklyn 99, but I think that you could also be missing the common thread, because the consequences of the consequences are important, but not so relevant.
One Day at a Time is a little better. This is about a Cuban immigrant family in the US. A very funny series that appeals with a lot of humor but also more serious topics.
