Neon Genesis Evangelion?

I started watching Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix. And I don't even check what's going on. I mean you are just thrown into the process and there are some angels or something.

What are these angels? Any mutants? Or really angels from God? Or aliens?
Are they intelligent?
Why are they always called the first, the second, the third angels and so on? If they are intelligent, why don't they just send several angels off at once?
Are all angels only in Japan or do those with the fifth, sixth angel mean, and so only by how many angels they have already been attacked?

Please answer without spoilers.

Watch End of Evangelion and the Rebuild series. Then, in my opinion, everything clears up ^^

To be honest, all of this is cleared up. Just keep looking and see the sequel End of Evangelion.

The anime is there to make you think and confuse. Watch the End of Evangelion after the anime and you'll know what I mean.

I also watched a few episodes and can tell you that the whole story is rolled out. The plot is surprisingly complex from an interpersonal perspective.
