You have certainly already noticed that Disney is currently only releasing all of its productions on its own streaming service Disney +, due to the current situation, and is no longer bringing any films into the cinemas or is not waiting to release them until this year only to bring them back to theaters.
In many big films like James Bond, however, this is done exactly the same way.
Films like Wanda Vision, Soul and on Mulan are only offered on Disney + and more will or should follow, I think. Disney, as one of the most powerful companies, could actually act differently because the Disney films or Marvel films in general always do extremely well and actually never flop - even with Corona it would almost certainly be the case, precisely because they haven't been for so long could go to the cinema more.
Since Disney now owns many studios such as 20th century fox / studios (if I'm not mistaken) and franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars and others, and of course, in my opinion, always brings out really nice (animation) films itself, I imagine now the question of whether this will go on forever or for the next few years and whether you will see virtually no films produced or co-produced by Disney in the cinemas when they reopen this year.
I'm kind of thinking about it because you just can't watch so many good films anymore (if like me you don't have the opportunity to get Disney +, for example). In theory, all these films will no longer be available on DVD / Blue Ray, right? Because otherwise you wouldn't have to buy Disney + anymore, Netflix films, for example, are not released on Blue Ray and DVD for precisely these reasons.
If it were really so, it would be really fatal for the cinemas because Disney films and films that run under Disney are always real blockbusters and bring a lot of money to the box office. Then the era of cinema would probably actually be over.
So what is your assessment? Do you think Disney is going away from DVD sales and cinema completely? And if so, forever or for how long?
Unfortunately, one can't say how it is with the cinema. You will probably only find out later when the cinemas reopen.
I know about the new Mulan film that it was also released on DVD. So I don't think they'll completely refrain from doing that.
Do not worry. There will definitely be normal films in the cinema soon. Simply because the income is much larger there.
The cinemas themselves are more likely to go bankrupt before Disney is bankrupt…
Disney is sure to bring films to the cinema again after the pandemic. In 2019, they had some films that grossed over $ 1 billion - that's not how much money you can make for a movie streaming.
But only the big blockbusters will come to the cinema, the Marvel and Star Wars films and the animated films, possibly films like Mulan, which was made for the big screen and doesn't work so well on small screens.
Smaller films or those that are not expected to take in much in the cinema will go straight to Disney +. Examples are movies like "The Fairy Godmother" which came to Disney + just before Christmas.
By the way, WandaVision is not a film but a 9-part television series - that was never intended for the cinema, even if the pandemic had never happened.
