Pilot episode?

Uhm, hey, I wanted to ask why many of the first episodes of a series are called "pilot episodes". I see this a lot on Netflix when I start new series. Is there any reason for the name?

As far as I know, this is an episode that is shot before the series so that you can first see how well the series is received by the audience and whether it is even worth filming the series

Probably because it usually stays with one episode when the odds rise or fall… Stupid formulated. Sorry But the rise or fall / crash is based on an airplane.
