In case you are confused by the ending, the studio ran out of funds during production. That's why the last episodes were produced as cheaply and simply as possible.
The film "End of Evangelion" (also on Netflix) offers an alternative or correct ending, so to speak. It was produced when the show became a hit and the money started flowing again.
